“Restorative Justice” is presented as an innovative approach to criminal justice, aimed at strengthening social ties and enhancing cohesion within communities. Non-confrontational dialogue, mediation, peacebuilding, and reconciliation form the core pillars of this approach. In recent years, interdisciplinary researchers have increasingly focused on applying this concept to urban planning and design, as cities represent the primary space for human settlement and activity in the modern world.

Over the past two decades, entrepreneurship promotion has been a key component of many strategies for advancing economic development at both city and national levels. These strategies have largely been published in academic literature and, more recently, enriched through the experience of successful entrepreneurs. Broad attention to entrepreneurship significantly increases the likelihood of its growth and success. However, the opposite is also true: lack of attention or insufficient focus on entrepreneurship development can negatively affect its growth trajectory.

Today, innovation and its expanding influence—whether in the form of the growth of technological infrastructure or the development of practical and creative ideas in economic and social fields—are considered one of the core pillars of urban management and development. In addition, high population density and the diverse economic, financial, and socio-cultural flows driven by the creative class in public spaces and urban environments have elevated the importance of innovation in the public sphere. As a result, decision-making and planning without considering the concept of innovation and the role of actors and teams active in urban innovation has become almost impossible. Therefore, over the past decade, the concept of innovation and the exploration of its role in urban studies and urban governance has become a key focus for researchers and experts.

The development of home-based businesses and small-scale local startups has been one of the key economic priorities in government programs over the past several years. However, evidence suggests that limited success has been achieved in this area, and the process of “development” has not been effectively realized in practice. According to official statistics published by the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour, and Social Welfare, home-based businesses account for only 2.5% of GDP, while small industries and micro-enterprises also hold a very small share of the national economy.

Sustainable economic development in any country depends less on heavy industry and large-scale factories and more on the vitality of small production units and home-based businesses that emerge within neighborhoods and rural communities. These small enterprises act like the capillaries of an economy, carrying the lifeblood of employment and livelihood to the most remote parts of a society. However, in our context, despite the vast human potential and rich tradition of local skills, micro and local businesses remain trapped in a complex web of structural, psychological, and communication-related challenges.

Accurate air quality monitoring using low-cost sensors in Lisbon, Portugal. This study is part of a paper titled “Spatial Clustering in Air Quality Data Accuracy: Evaluation of Low-Cost Sensors in Lisbon Using a Novel Distance–Correlation Index” by the Mammute Urban Innovation Studio (MUIS). The research presents an innovative framework for evaluating and optimizing urban environmental monitoring systems, aligned with the mission of Mammute Consulting and Accelerator Center in advancing data-driven and community-oriented urban development. This study addresses the critical challenge of ensuring fair and accurate access to air quality data, comparing the performance of low-cost sensors measuring pollutants such as NO₂ and PM₁₀ against reference monitoring stations. In this context, a novel analytical metric called the “Distance–Correlation Index” is introduced, combined with a weighting approach based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA).

Tourism development in peripheral regions is often shaped by extractive models in which local communities are marginalized and cultural heritage is commodified without strengthening endogenous growth. In response to this challenge, the present study examines an innovative participatory approach to tourism development implemented by the Mammute Urban Innovation Studio (MUIS) in the Makoran region and Qeshm Island in Iran. Leveraging an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach and co-creation methodologies, this initiative strengthens local agency, preserves indigenous culture, and fosters entrepreneurial innovation. This case study, drawing on participatory action research, narrative ethnography, and social asset mapping, demonstrates how bottom-up, context-sensitive strategies can transform marginalized areas into dynamic and sustainable tourism hubs. The findings contribute to the emerging literature on inclusive tourism development and present a scalable model that integrates local knowledge, cultural identity, and economic empowerment.
