City Branding

From Canvas to Brand

City branding in the perspective of Mammute reflects the authentic identity, values, and inherent capacities of a city. This approach focuses on local characteristics and social, economic, and cultural contexts instead of adding external elements, creating a lasting and aesthetic image that gains greater meaning and impact through active participation of the local community.

About City Branding

Mammute’s approach to City Branding
In the City innovation department of Mammute, City branding is carried out based on four key components:
The physical components include symbols and natural elements that evoke the brand identity.
Personality components encompass human, social, and economic characteristics.
Cultural components include social values and behavioral patterns.
Finally, interaction components emphasize relationships and cultural, artistic, and social events that shape the experiences of citizens and visitors.
These concepts together create a comprehensive and sustainable City branding system.

Asset-based City branding
City Branding in the Mammute City Innovation Studio is a process that creates a lasting image and a comprehensible identity of the city by discovering and strengthening local values. Our goal is to create an emotional and mental connection between citizens and the City environment; a connection that leads to city differentiation, tourism attraction, and the strengthening of collective identity.
Mammute Approach
We view City branding in two dimensions: tangible and intangible:
Tangible Dimension
Creating a lasting visual image that translates environmental values into visual language and remains in the audience’s mind.
Intangible Dimension
Shaping the brand identity; a deeper concept rooted in the shared identity between people and the City environment.
At Mammute, the City branding process begins with understanding the city’s economic–social, cultural, and physical–spatial values, capacities, and assets. We aim to uncover the City brand that has formed over years within the fabric of society and is familiar, respected, and valuable to its citizens.
Components of City Branding in Mammute
Physical Components:
Physical components of City branding emphasize artistic objects such as handicrafts and sculptures, as well as natural colors in architecture and City spaces, shaping the city’s visual identity. These components, through landmark buildings, squares, parks, and historical structures, create a lasting experience and a deep connection with citizens and visitors.
Personality Components:
Personality components of City branding include human, social, and economic characteristics that are reflected in people’s interactions, economic activities, and cultural events. Images of people interacting in local markets, cultural events such as festivals and concerts, and economic centers showcase the city’s social and cultural character and shape its unique identity.
Interaction Components:
Interaction components of City branding emphasize social and cultural relationships among people and various events. These components, through artistic, cultural, and religious events, display interactions among different groups of people and, by creating shared social spaces, convey a living and dynamic experience of the city to the audience.
Cultural Components:
Cultural components of City branding include values, customs, and social behaviors reflected in daily interactions and cultural events. These components, through language, local ceremonies, festivals, and behavioral patterns, reflect the cultural identity of the city.
